FT: Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea – Game goes to penalties

The sight of Petr Cech diving the wrong way when faced with an opposition player taking a penalty has become something of a running joke for Arsenal fans. For a goalkeeper who famously played a starring role in a Champions League final shootout, the former Chelsea star has an appalling record when it comes to facing spot kicks. On Wednesday evening, Eden Hazard became the 15th player to face Petr Cech from 12 yards during his Arsenal career and the 15th player to score past him. Even more embarrassingly for the 35-year-old, he has contrived to dive the wrong way on 12 occasions and four times in succession. Cech’s record, however, only tells part of the story when it comes to Arsenal’s bizarre record of conceding penalties, particularly in the Premier League. Ironically, on the occasion that Wojciech Szczesny palmed away Christan Benteke’s effort, the Belgium international striker pounced on the rebound to bring his side level in a game Aston Villa would eventually win 3-1, with the now Crystal Palace man scoring another penalty in the 61st minute. Between then and Eden Hazard’s successful conversion, Cech, Szcesny, David Ospina and Emiliano Martinez have faced a combined total of 23 penalties without saving a single one of them. Ignoring the rebound Benteke mopped up, you have to go back to January 13, 2013 and Szczesny’s save from Edin Dzeko to find a Premier League penalty Arsenal didn’t concede from.
